Exploring Puerto Princessa, Palawan: Firefly Watching

Puerto Princessa is not only blessed with the richness of nature, but more importantly, its people are in itself a blessing. They are aware of the importance of caring for the environment. One proof of this is how they have established the a group that protects the mangroves and the fireflies in Iwahig.

Unfortunately, our hosts had to fly back to Cebu since their vacation is over. But their family was gracious enough to let us stay in their home for the duration of our stay. So from then on, all our adventures would have to be done Do-It-Yourself.

We booked a tricycle in the city to take us there. We managed to get someone who would take us to Brgy. Iwahig for only PhP600. Other drivers tried to charge us Php1000. We thought it was just near, but we realized it was really far as we have been driving for almost an hour in a very dark road. The whole ride was more or less was an hour.

We registered there and paid PhP600 for the paddle boat. The boat can accomodate 4 people, including the boatman. Since there was just the 2 of us, we invited our tricycle driver to join us, since he hasn't tried the experience.

Our boatman was really funny, and explained to us the details of the organization, as well as the different kinds of fireflies, their life-span, how they mate, how they mature, etc. It was a very educational experience for me. I was so impressed when he told us that most of them are just volunteers and they are doing it because they support the advocacy. May their tribe increase!

Getting good pictures is impossible because it's very dark, and you're not allowed to use flash. Besides, how can you capture the lights from the fireflies if you use a flash. Also, you can't use a tripod in very small paddle boat that's moving. So, we have to settle with what we were able to capture.

this is the best we can do

fireflies

feels like we're on an educational field trip
